Halton Polecats v Cartmel Valley Lions - 26th April

First game of the season, The Halton Polecats Bronco Team travel away to Cartmel Valley.

The first inning, The Polecats get to hit first, Harry Pickup started Halton off with a tidy single to left field, and made it to third base on errors and pass balls, but was left stranded as Cartmel struck out the next three batters.

Halton’s defence looked strong as Cartmel batted, with Mike Dixon on the mound, pitching for the Polecats. Cartmel’s first batter hit a single, the next two batters where put out with some good defensive plays from Halton involving the pitcher and the Polecats catcher, Alex Jones. Some good batting from Cartmel allowed them to get the head start by scoring the five run maximum for the first inning.

In the second, Halton’s first batter was struck out. Spencer Roberts was awarded a walk, and cleverly advanced to second on a wild pitch. The next batter was also struck out. Dixon hit a hard single to right field, allowing Roberts to run in and score the Polecats first run. Jones was awarded a walk, giving Halton runners on first and second. The next batter was struck out leaving the runners stranded and ending the inning.

Cartmel started their inning well by hitting two singles and scoring twice, but again good defensive plays from the Polecats third baseman Harry Pickup and first baseman Spencer Roberts saw an end to Cartmel’s run.

The third inning ended quickly for Halton as Cartmel’s pitcher struck three batters in a row.

A hard hit triple from Cartmel’s right fielder, J. Hill, gave them a good start in the third. Followed by a single from S. Auton. The Polecats held Cartmel to two runs in this inning, with an amazing throw from third, by Pickup, to first, Roberts, who held on to the ball cleanly for the out. Dixon took care of the next two outs; he struck out one batter, and tagged the next batter, who was running to first.

In the fourth, Jamie Evans, for The Polecats, was awarded a walk, and advanced to third on pass balls. The next batter was struck out. Rosie Cotgreave was awarded a walk, leaving runners on the corners for Halton. Dixon hit a double that came close to the outfield fence, allowing Evans and Cotgreave to score. Dixon advanced to third on a pass ball as the next batter for the Polecats was struck out. The next batter grounded out ending the inning and leaving a runner stranded on third.

Cartmel scored no runs in the fourth as Halton’s defence shone again. A pop-up to the pitcher started the inning off, there was some panic as the whole infield nearly collided under the ball, but Dixon held onto the ball. Another throw from Pickup saw the second out. The third out was an unassisted out at first by Roberts.

The fifth saw a good start for the Polecats as Owen Williams showed hustle to first as the Cartmel’s catcher dropped the third strike. Owen advanced to second on a pass ball. A series of walks came from the Cartmel pitcher, awarding Ed Williams, Jamie, and Spencer their base. This allowed Owen to score. Rosie was awarded her base through a hit by pitch, which allowed Ed to score. Dixon was walked, scoring Jamie. The next batter was struck out. Pickup hit a hard ball towards right field but was caught out by an outstanding diving catch by Cartmel’s first baseman T. Woodbun, which ended the run for Halton.

The Polecats made a pitching change in the bottom of the fifth, bringing Harry Pickup to the mound. Cartmel started the inning slowly as Pickup tagged the first batter out on the base path. The next batter was struck out. The next two batters singled and scored on errors and pass balls, the inning was ended as Pickup struck out the next batter.

The sixth inning was over quickly as Halton’s next three batters where struck out. Cartmel did not need to bat in the sixth because they already had the lead and won the game 11-6.
