Sunday, and the Jags
play host to the other newly promoted team for 2007 the Sheffield
Bladerunners.
Another fine performance on the hill from Taggart kept the Jags in the game,
tied 3-3, until the end of the 7th and extra innings. The
Bladerunners were ever threatening but three strike outs from Taggart ended the
Sheffield hopes in the 8th only for these to arise once more as the
Halton bottom of the order were dismissed in that inning.
Taggart climbed the
hill once more in the top of the 9th and having walked his first
batter he struck out the second and walked the next who advanced on a passed
ball. With a runner in scoring position representing the possible winning run
for Sheffield and also one on first, a hard hit ball to second was taken close
to the ground by Kevin Cuddy, the Jags second baseman, and a quick throw to
first baseman Harry Mills completed the double play to end the Sheffield hopes
again with the game still tied and Halton to bat.
Leading off in the bottom
of the ninth, Tyler Mattler struck out but shortstop, Scott Coker, singled to
put the winning run on base. Patient at the plate, Mills worked his at bat and
Coker advanced on a passed ball to scoring position. Mills earned 3 balls
during this at bat but took advantage of this count to launch a double into
right centre field, scoring Coker and winning the Jags first game of 2007.
The second game of this
double header was another closely fought contest with the lead changing inning
by inning until by the end of the 6th Jags had a one run lead 8-7.
Veteran pitcher, Chris Hartley, was on the hill for Halton as injury problems
were stopping Harry Mills from throwing. Hartley kept the Jags in contention as
both top of the order and the bottom struggled with hitting in this game. A 3
run rally by the Bladerunners put the visitors ahead in the top of the 7th
and the Jags were dismissed in the bottom of that inning to give Sheffield a win
on the day in what was perhaps a fitting share of the spoils for these two
evenly matched teams.
The Jags
now look forward to several Sundays on the road with Barnsley being the first
stop next week in inter division play.

Halton Jaguars v Menwith Hill Patriots
- 29/4/07

Newly promoted Halton
Jaguars had a tough induction to the National League with an away double header
to 2006 champions, Menwith Hill Patriots. The Jags matched the patriots in game
1 with Chris Taggart strong on the hill for Halton, keeping the Jags in the game
so that by the end of the fifth the score was 4-4. With a blistered finger
causing problems for Taggart the patriots took a two run lead in the bottom of
the 6th and with Halton scoreless the top of the 7th the
game went to the Patriots.
Game 2 was no better for the Halton visitors as they
went down by 26 – 2 with Jags relief pitchers struggling to find the strike zone
and the home team taking full advantage.
